Day 5 - The Long and Winding Road

With shops being closed when we arrived yesterday, we didn't even have milk for a cup of tea at the cottage when we woke up. So after a shower this morning we headed into Chauffailles for breakfast at the Patisserie : tea and coffees with chocolate croissants ; then off to the local supermarket where we stocked up on groceries, wine and beer. It is so civilised here where you can just buy your wines off the supermarket shelf.Dave and I visited the local Tourist Information Centre and manged to have some sort of conversation with the French speaking lady behind the counter. After lunch of baguette and cold meats,we hopped in the car and headed north into the Rhone wine region. Our trip took us on narrow and very winding roads up the Rhone Alps - to a height of 825m where we had information at one roadside stop. With David & I still getting a feel for driving in Europe it was scary stuff at times. Whoever is in the passenger seat has the task of shouting "kerb!" when we stray too close to the right ; the general collective intake of breath tells us when we stray too close to the centre of the road. We explored a couple of towns in the region, seeing medieval churches, mountainside vineyards, and a wine museum at Julienne complete with tastings. We ventured home to a bottle of wine, a walk through the local forest, and back to a homecooked meal - unfortunately, we couldn't get the BBQ fire going - but we had a nice meal washed down with our wine purchases. As I write, we will finish off our strawberry flan with tea and coffee and plan tomorrow's trip into the Burgundy wine region. It doesn't get dark here until about 10pm, so we are able to fit a lot into the day - and can be quite worn out by the time we get to bed. The forecast is for more 30 degree days. I am wishing I'd packed less jumpers & more summer shirts.
