Day 18 : Art for Arts Sake (12/7/09)

Today we spent the day viewing the art treasures of Florence. We had reserved tickets to the Ufizzi, the museum that houses all the treasures that the Medici's began collecting in the late 1400's. We saw works by Rembrant, Da Vinci. Michaelangelo, Lippi, Carvaggio and others and took in a history of Renaissance Art courtesy of the audio guide. We are all now experts. We had decided that we would have a good lunch today to save looking for a big meal for dinner, so we found another Italian restaurant where we had a three course lunch with Italian beer for the boys and wine for the girls. Then it was a trip up town to another museum where we were able to see Michaelangelo's David - a truly imprssive sculpture together with more paintings & sculpture. Having taken in as much Florentine Art as we could, we went home and sat in the Villa garden having a light dinner with a few bottles of wine, watching the sun go down over the Tuscan Hills

  1. Ciao all,
Sounds like the days are a good combination of doing and relaxing; what a perfect mix for the *best* sort of holiday. Lovely to sit outside in the evenings with such a view. We envy you!

Well, yesterday under our Perth Sun we took a trip to the Swan Valley and got ourselves lost looking for a particular vineyard. We resorted to the GPS - which kept us on the major roads but took ages to find us... so sympathies to you; at least we're driving on the correct side and most other drivers not hell-bent on overtaking.

Enjoy more wine and sun and keep writing for all of us back home.
    Love Liz and Jim x

  2. Hi All,

Can't imagine anything more exquisite that sitting watching the sun go down over the Tuscan Hills. Are the sunflowers blooming in the fields?

You seem to have developed a good mix of sight seeing with relaxing and the accommodation souns great.
Your commentary on the tour of the Uffizzi and Academia brought back memories of our time in Italy - such a lot of art and sculpture that it was difficult to take it all in.

Keep safe and we are looking forward to your next blog.
    Love
    Mum and Dad xxxx
