A day back in Perth had given us time to wash and dry our clothes, do some shopping and visit family. Next day - jetsetters that we are - it was back to the airport again for the flights to Sri Lanka. Both were uneventful and the transit at Changi airport passed quickly, and suddenly we had gone from the cold spell in Perth to the humidity of SL as we passed through immigration on the stroke of midnight. Our tour company rep was on hand to navigate us through currency exchange and then meet our driver who will be with us for the whole of our tour. He drove us to our hotel where we were shown to our grandiose room - so huge after the small rooms of Europe. It was a pity we were only in it for less than 12 hours before departing next morning.
Things we learned about Sri Lanka today #1 : The drive from the airport was very educational. The white line in the middle of the road merely serves to divide it in half and has no bearing on where you r car should be. The local road rules seem to revolve around a hierarchy: pedestrian / bicycle / tuktuk/ motorbike/ car/ truck/ bus. The further down the food chain you are the further left you move on the road to let someone bigger overtake, and if you are coming in the opposite direction you move over to let the two lanes coming at you pass by. Once you realise this then there isn't any panic as the multitude of vehicle types jostle on the road. Our driver Mr Cooray is a very placid man and is rarely perturbed by the chaos around him, so we have learned quickly there is no need to panic and besides, with all this going on it is rare to get above 60km/hr even on the main "highway".
