Picture This (22/06/11)

So imagine this : you're watching the sunset in one of the finest locations in the world, perched high up on the edge of the caldera in a heated spa with background music and nobody else in sight. Its very romantic, and a very peaceful setting. We were given a fruit cocktail when we got in, then were alone for the next hour. When we did get out at the end, Despina, our host, promptly came up the steps to tell us we could get back in, they would bring candles to place around the pool and she would bring us a glass of wine each and a tray of savoury treats. I don't know if we look like we need all the help we can get, but they do know how to look after you here. So we stayed in the spa until the night was black and the stars were twinkling overhead - an amazing experience.
Today we walked into Fira again, and went to two of the museums on Santorini. One has quite a display on Akrotiri, an ancient city here that was buried in ash in the great eruption in the 17ty century BC : it is equivalent to Pompeii, but only 5% has been excavated to date, But wall freascos, vases and a lot of objects have already been recovered, and it was quite fascinating to see the exhibits. Seeing it was our final lunch , we went all out Greek, sharing marinated octopus with oregano, fried tomato balls, cheese triangles in filo pastry, moussaka and baklava for dessert. With, of course, a carafe of wine. Then after a bit of shopping we walked home again to admire the view, had a swim in the pool and then prepared for our departure tomorrow.
Tomorrow will be a horror day - we will be up before 5am, have a flight that leaves at 6.55 am then we have to wait at the airport all day until our flight at 4.40pm, arriving in Dubai ay 10.40pm. Not a day to look forward to ..
