Oracular Spectacular (10/06/11)
After a good breakfast at our B&B - best yoghurt we've had so far in Greece - we trekked out of town again to explore the ruins of Ancient Delphi. They cover a suprisingly large area, not including the free access sites we saw yesterday. Even though we are getting a bit blase regarding these ancient sites, its hard not to be impressed with the scope of things here. There were lots of buildings, ranging from the huge Temple of Apollo to lots of little treasury buildings, and other smaller temples for offerings. This was the place that was home to the famous Oracle who dispensed
enigmatic answers to the questions put to her. There were huge monuments , statues and columns ; a theatre that could seat 5000 and a
stadium that could hold 7000 people for their Pythian Games, which were just below the Olympic games in importance. All this is in an area with spectacular scenery, and we were lucky to get there early and avoid the crowds and the worst of the heat. Even so it was a steep - and long - climb in places, but luckily I felt a strange affinity with the narrow paths after eating goat last night. We worked up quite an appetite for lunch, so heading back into town, we found another restaurant on the edge of the hill with amazing views - took a p
hoto of the view for you here - and shared a combination of local dishes for lunch. With the usual bread serving, we also had traditional Greek dishes : Calamri, Spanokopitta (spinach pie) , eggplant salad , and marinated octopus. All magnificent, and washed down with a cold beer. It was a very pleasant long lunch. The afternoon was lazy - a bit of a walk to enjoy the scenery and see the impressive church in the town, and tonight will see us head off to a local Taverna for tea fot hopefully some rabbit stew and local red wine. Tomorrow will be an interesting day when we try to get to Meteora - we have encountered some problems so next blog should be an interesting tale !

Hi Chris and Carmel,
ReplyDeleteWe can sense you are both reducing the pace and travelling 'slow' in the sense of long lunches, early starts and lazy afternoons. All a holiday should be.
Your photos are beautiful and what spectacular views. Keep posting for those of us back home.
